FIELD TRIP – Yay!

by admin

Hey guys!

So here is the deal… we are going on a field trip on Tuesday for class.

Make sure you bring a camera, sketchpad, pen/pencil, and an open brain to absorb as much as you can. Look at the map below for directions. Both locations are roughly within 1 block of each other.

Section 01 from 5pm-6:50pm you are going to meet me at MedChi between 5pm and 5:15pm.

MedChi is The Maryland State Medical Society and is a non-profit organization whose goal is to serve as Maryland’s foremost advocate and resource for physicians, patients & the public health. But it is so much more than that for us. We will explore a beautiful building that is filled with crazy cool books, paintings, and objects that are sure to inspire you. Here is a link for MedChi.

Section 02 from 7pm-8:50pm you are going to meet me at MICA’s Dolphin Building to Explore the Globe Press and Collection between 7pm and 7:15pm.

Globe Poster, historically one of the nation’s largest showcard companies, has been telling the story of R&B and all forms of American music and entertainment through bright and iconic posters since 1929. Globe began by printing posters for vaudeville acts, movie theaters, burlesque houses and carnivals, and became known for its work with R&B and soul performers-including James Brown, Ike and Tina Turner and Solomon Burke-and later hip-hop acts. Big, bold, fat type, DayGlo colors and distinctive lettering were hallmarks of the Globe style. The company’s unrivaled archive includes letterpress wood type, printing cuts and original posters. Globe’s sturdy wood type and metal and wood cuts have survived decades of use, outliving the hands that created them and many of the musicians they popularized. The print shop closed its doors in late 2010. Here is a great link for more info about Globe. Here is another great one!

DIRECTIONS from UMBC to MedChi then MICA
The drive is roughly 19 min and only 10 miles from UMBC’s campus.
You may park on the street or in a garage. There should be plenty of street parking in front or within 1 block of each building. It is up to you. Just make sure you check if you have to pay for meters or not.
