MICA TYPE 1 PROJECT 4: BOOK

by admin

Hey guys!

We are doing a book. Not just any book, but Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. You will find the text for the book HERE thanks to the Gutenberg Project.

We will talk about the format and some specifications in class. I will update with more info soon!

In the meantime, below is the base grid that we will be using and some rough specifications.

Final page format will be 7″ x 8.5″ which will mean that your spreads in InDesign will end up being 8.5″ tall by 14″ wide. We will also be including an 1/8″ bleed on all sides of your spreads. The entire design will be done in Black and White + one PMS color that we all decide upon in class.

We will use this grid as a standard for all of the pages of the book so that the text have some common elements of format. How you use use that grid is up to you.

Download PDF of GRIDHERE.

There are 13 chapters to the book and 20 of you so…that means that you will be working in pairs! Yay! You will find the text for the book HERE.

Here is the breakdown of who will work with who on which chapters.

CHAPTER I. Looking-Glass house AKANE & LOUISA
CHAPTER II. The Garden of Live Flowers Albany & Nora
CHAPTER III. Looking-Glass Insects Ray & Danny

CHAPTER IV. Tweedledum & Tweedledee DeAndre
CHAPTER V. Wool and Water Ben Fann & Katie
CHAPTER VI. Humpty Dumpty Samantha & Alex

CHAPTER VII. The Lion and the Unicorn Melissa & Kay
CHAPTER VIII. ‘It’s my own Invention’ Daphne & Ben Torres
CHAPTER IX. Queen Alice Brianna & Noella

CHAPTER X. Shaking Tao & Yunni
CHAPTER XI. Waking Tao & Yunni
CHAPTER XII. Which Dreamed it? Tao & Yunni

Each pair of designers will have 12 pages of blank space to design with the given text. Think about hierarchy, readability, structure, flow of design between chapters, and scale while designing. In addition to the chapter/s that you are assigned, you will also have to design a title page for your chapter and include an illuminated drop cap for the first letter of the chapter that you are working on.

Lastly, a cover and colophon will have be designed for the book. When finished, we will upload the whole book to the class site in addition to printing a copy for everyone over the holidays. You may share the book with anyone that you choose as long as you give it to them as a gift and do not accept any payment for the text.

Enjoy!
